WHY UGANDA?
Uganda is Africa’s most underrated destination β extraordinary wildlife, ancient forests, and an intimacy of experience that mass-tourism destinations can’t offer.
π¦
Uganda is home to over half the world’s remaining mountain gorillas. Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and Mgahinga National Park offer intimate gorilla trekking experiences in small groups of just 8 per permit.
π
Kibale National Park has the world’s highest density of chimpanzees. Your chances of an up-close encounter are extraordinary β habituation experiences allow multi-hour visits alongside wild troops.
π¦
Queen Elizabeth National Park’s Ishasha sector is one of just two places on Earth where lions regularly climb fig trees. The reason isn’t fully understood β which makes seeing it even more extraordinary.
π§
The Nile forces itself through a 7-metre gap with such power it creates a permanent rainbow. The boat cruise to the base of the falls, past hippos and Nile crocodiles, is one of Africa’s great wildlife journeys.
πΏ
Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is a UNESCO World Heritage Site β 331 kmΒ² of ancient Afromontane forest, one of Africa’s most biodiverse ecosystems and home to over 120 mammal species.
π―
Uganda has far fewer visitors than Kenya or Tanzania. Gorilla permits are strictly controlled. You’ll trek without crowds, camp in near-empty national parks, and experience Africa as it was meant to be experienced.

“Being 8 metres from a silverback gorilla β his eyes directly on mine β is the single most profound wildlife experience of my life. No zoo, no documentary, nothing prepares you. Bwindi is on another level entirely. Tourist Lads made every step of it seamless.”

“In 5 days we went from kneeling in mist in front of a gorilla family to watching tree-climbing lions in the fading golden light of Queen Elizabeth. Uganda packs more contrast into a single trip than anywhere else in Africa. This itinerary is perfectly constructed.”

“The Ugandan Soul itinerary changed how I see travel. The tracking lesson with the Batwa community, learning to read bent grass and displaced earth to find where animals have walked β that was worth the entire journey. Then the gorillas the next morning. Uganda is transformative.”

COMMON QUESTIONS
Everything you need to know before planning your Uganda safari.
Yes β gorilla trekking permits are required and strictly limited to 8 people per gorilla family per day. In 2024 the permit costs $800 USD. We include permit booking as part of all gorilla itineraries. Popular seasons (JuneβSeptember, DecemberβFebruary) sell out months in advance β book early.
Gorilla trekking involves hiking through dense forest for 1β8 hours depending on where the gorillas are that day. Terrain can be steep and muddy. A good level of fitness is recommended β you don’t need to be an athlete, but you should be comfortable with 3β5 hours of walking over uneven ground. Walking sticks are provided.
Uganda is year-round due to its equatorial location, but the dry seasons (JuneβSeptember and DecemberβFebruary) offer the best trekking conditions with firmer trails. The ‘green seasons’ (MarchβMay and OctoberβNovember) are cheaper and the forests are lush β gorilla sightings rates remain very high year-round.
Absolutely β our itineraries are designed to combine experiences. The Great Primate Double pairs gorillas with chimpanzee tracking. The High-Contrast Safari combines gorillas with tree-climbing lions and Murchison Falls. The Ugandan Soul adds cultural immersion. Or choose the Curator’s Choice for a fully custom combination.
Gorilla permits sell out 6β12 months ahead for peak seasons. We recommend booking at least 6 months in advance for JuneβSeptember departures and 4 months for other times. The Curator’s Choice (private) can sometimes be arranged on shorter notice β contact us to discuss your dates.
Uganda is considered safe for tourists in all the areas covered by our itineraries β Bwindi, Kibale, Queen Elizabeth, and Murchison Falls are well-established, regularly visited safari destinations. Our local guides know every route intimately. We monitor conditions closely and provide comprehensive pre-travel briefings to all confirmed guests.
