EXPEDITION HIGHLIGHTS
Why the Northern Circuit Stands Apart
📈
Highest Success Rate
Nearly 98% of climbers on the Northern Circuit reach Uhuru Peak. The gradual, extended ascent profile gives your body the maximum time to acclimatise before summit night.
🌐
360° Views
The only route that circumnavigates the full mountain — you see every face of Kilimanjaro and look out over both the Tanzanian plains and the Kenyan border.
🤫
Crowd-Free Wilderness
While other routes operate like conga lines, the Northern Circuit sees a fraction of the traffic. True Tanzanian wilderness, on Africa’s highest peak, largely to yourself.
🌄
The Northern Slopes
Unique terrain found on no other route — views out across the Kenyan plains from high alpine desert. Most Kilimanjaro climbers never see this face of the mountain.
Route Overview
The Northern Circuit is the newest, longest, and most remote route on Kilimanjaro. While other routes get crowded, Tourist Lads heads north.
This 10-day journey circles the quiet northern slopes near the Kenyan border, offering 360-degree views. Because it is the longest route, it offers the best acclimatisation — meaning you have the highest chance of standing on the summit.
Our Northern Circuit crews are specialists in “slow-burn” trekking, ensuring the group stays motivated and healthy for the full 10 days. We include an extra Acclimatisation Day at Buffalo Camp that most budget operators skip.
10-Day Travel Plan
Ten days structured around gradual altitude gain, maximum acclimatisation, and the highest summit success rate on the mountain.
Day 1
🛬
Arrival & Briefing
📍 Moshi
Arrival and preparation — your expedition begins tonight
Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) where you are met by the Tourist Lads team. Transfer to your hotel in Moshi — Chanya Lodge or Parkview Inn depending on your booking tier. Evening briefing covers the route, team introductions, gear check, and weather expectations. Rest, hydrate, and prepare.
✓ Hotel dinner
🏕 Chanya Lodge or Parkview Inn, Moshi
Day 2
🌿
Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa
📍 Rainforest Zone
First steps on the mountain — into the rainforest
Transfer to Londorossi Gate on the western flank. After registration and final gear checks, the trail enters dense montane rainforest. Today is deliberately gentle — designed to settle the team into mountain rhythm. The forest is rich with colobus monkeys, exotic birdlife, and the constant sound of water. Camp at Mti Mkubwa (‘Big Tree’).

Day 3
🌾
Trek to Shira 1 Camp
📍 High Moorland · 3,500m
Breaking through the treeline onto the Shira Plateau
The trail climbs steeply out of the forest and emerges onto the Shira Plateau — a vast, high moorland that forms the remnant of Kilimanjaro’s ancient western volcano. The change in landscape is dramatic. Views across the plateau open up in all directions as the first altitude effects begin. Camp at Shira 1.

Day 4
🏕
Shira Plateau to Moir Hut
📍 Shira Plateau · 4,200m
Into the Northern Circuit — leaving the crowds behind
This is where the Northern Circuit diverges from every other route. While other climbers turn east toward the main mountain, you head north. The plateau stretches toward the Kenyan border. Wildlife is occasionally spotted at this elevation. The Extra Acclimatisation Day Tourist Lads includes here — which most budget operators skip — is crucial for summit success. Camp at Moir Hut, where the northern wilderness opens fully.

Day 5
🐃
Buffalo Ridge to Buffalo Camp
📍 Northern Alpine Desert · 4,000m
Over Buffalo Ridge — the mountain’s remote northern face
Cross Buffalo Ridge into the remote northern zone. Looking north you see the Kenyan plains stretching to the horizon — a view no other Kilimanjaro route delivers. The terrain becomes increasingly lunar: bare rock, sparse vegetation, and silence. This is the highlight of the route for many climbers. Camp at Buffalo Camp.
✓ All meals
🏕 Buffalo Camp · 4,000m
Day 6
🏜
Buffalo Camp to Third Cave
📍 Remote Alpine Desert · 3,800m
Traversing the remote eastern face — a private Kilimanjaro
The route now loops around the eastern side of the mountain. Third Cave Camp sits in a dramatic rocky landscape with vast views. The altitude dips slightly here — intentional acclimatisation design — before the serious ascent resumes. The team rests, rehydrates, and prepares for the summit push.
✓ All meals
🏕 Third Cave Camp · 3,800m
Day 7
⛺
Ascent to School Hut
📍 School Hut Base Camp · 4,750m
Base camp — the summit begins tonight
A steady climb to School Hut, the highest camp on the Northern Circuit route. Today is deliberately short in distance but significant in altitude. Afternoon rest is mandatory. The lead guide delivers a summit briefing: the plan, the timing, the turnaround protocol, and what to expect in the dark. Sleep from 19:00. Wake call at midnight.

Day 8
🏆
SUMMIT DAY
📍 Uhuru Peak · 5,895m → Mweka Camp · 3,100m
Midnight push. Crater rim. Uhuru Peak. Descent.
The alarm sounds at midnight. After a warm drink, the team departs in darkness. The midnight push to the crater rim — Stella Point — takes 5 to 7 hours depending on conditions and individual pace. Your guide adjusts speed for every climber. From Stella Point, a further 45-minute walk along the crater rim delivers you to Uhuru Peak — 5,895m, the Roof of Africa. After photographs and a moment to absorb the achievement, descent begins. You will reach Mweka Camp by mid-afternoon.

Final Descent to Mweka Gate
📍 Mweka Gate · Celebration Lunch
The last steps. Certificates. Celebration.
A final descent through the rainforest zone to Mweka Gate. Summit certificates are presented. The team photographs together. A celebration lunch is included before the transfer back to Moshi. Evening at your hotel — shower, rest, and the first truly flat sleep in 8 days.

WHAT CLIMBERS SAY
From Those Who Reached the Summit
Verified reviews from climbers who completed the Northern Circuit with Tourist Lads.
★★★★★
“The 10 days flew by. Being on the quiet side of the mountain felt like a private expedition. The Tourist Lads team knew exactly when we needed a push and when we needed to slow down. Standing on Uhuru Peak with three of us who had never climbed before — that is something I will carry for the rest of my life.”

The Grand Circle — Northern Circuit
★★★★★
“Day 5 on Buffalo Ridge looking north over Kenya while standing on the highest free-standing mountain in the world. No other climbers visible in any direction. That view does not exist on any other route. The acclimatisation day made the summit feel manageable rather than desperate.”

The Grand Circle — Northern Circuit
★★★★★
“I had attempted Lemosho twice before with other operators and not summited. Tourist Lads took us up the Northern Circuit and I stood on Uhuru Peak at 6:15 AM in perfect conditions. The pacing strategy is the difference. They understand this mountain.”

Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know before reserving your place on the Northern Circuit.
What fitness level is required?
You need to be able to walk 6–8 hours per day on consecutive days carrying a daypack (5–8kg). You do not need to be an athlete — but you should be regularly active. Training recommendations: 3-month build-up including hiking with a loaded pack, stair climbing, and cardiovascular conditioning. We send a detailed training guide with your booking confirmation.
What is the success rate compared to other routes?
The Northern Circuit’s 98% success rate is the highest of any Kilimanjaro route because of its length and gradual altitude profile. The Marangu Route (5–6 days) has a success rate of around 65–70%. The Lemosho Route (7–8 days) reaches around 85–90%. The extra days on the Northern Circuit, combined with our additional acclimatisation day, account for the difference.
What is the acclimatisation day at Buffalo Camp?
On Day 5, rather than pushing directly through, we rest a full day at Buffalo Camp (4,000m). The itinerary includes a short acclimatisation hike to a higher point and return — the ‘climb high, sleep low’ principle that is fundamental to altitude physiology. Most budget operators skip this day to reduce costs. We include it because it is the single most important day in our success rate.
Do I need specialist climbing gear?
Yes — warm, layered clothing is essential. You will need a 4-season sleeping bag, thermal base layers, waterproof outer layers, warm gloves, and a hat. We provide tents and mattresses. You can rent a complete gear package (duffel bag, trekking poles, down jacket) for $150 through our add-on. A full gear list is sent with your booking confirmation.
What vaccinations and health preparations are needed?
Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is required for entry into Tanzania. Malaria prophylaxis is recommended for the lower-altitude days. Altitude sickness medication (Diamox/acetazolamide) should be discussed with your doctor before departure. We strongly recommend a pre-trip medical check-up. Detailed health guidance is included in your pre-departure pack.
Can I combine this with a Tanzania wildlife safari?
Yes — and we recommend it. The Ngorongoro Crater add-on (save $100 when booked with your climb) departs from Moshi on Day 10. The crater is one of Africa’s great wildlife concentrations — all Big Five, flamingos, and the world’s highest density of large predators. Alternatively, we can arrange a Serengeti extension. Contact us with your post-climb dates and we will design the safari.
