FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Quick Answers to Common Questions

Ten answers that cover most of what travellers ask us before they book.

01

Do I need travel insurance?

Yes — we strongly recommend travel insurance for every trip. A comprehensive policy should cover medical emergencies, trip cancellation, lost luggage, and emergency evacuation. Safari and adventure destinations require specific adventure sports or activity coverage. We can recommend trusted insurance providers and will confirm minimum requirements for your specific itinerary.

02

Do I need a visa for my trip?

Visa requirements depend entirely on your nationality and destination. Most European, US, Canadian, and Commonwealth citizens receive free visas on arrival in Botswana, Namibia, Tanzania, and Uganda for stays up to 90 days. South Africa has its own visa regime. We confirm exact requirements for your nationality as part of your booking documentation and flag any Yellow Fever certificate requirements.

03

When is the best time to travel?

It depends on your destination and priority. The dry season (May–October) across East and Southern Africa delivers the strongest wildlife viewing — vegetation thins, animals concentrate at water, and predator activity is highest. The wet season (November–April) brings lush green landscapes, newborn animals, exceptional birdlife, and dramatically fewer vehicles in parks. Both seasons offer genuine safari value. Contact us with your destination and we will advise specifically.

04

Is it safe to travel?

Our destinations — Botswana, Namibia, South Africa, Tanzania, and Uganda — are among Africa’s safest travel countries with well-established tourism infrastructure. All our guides are locally trained and safety-certified. We maintain real-time contact with every active itinerary and have emergency protocols in place for every destination. Your safety is the first consideration in every decision we make.

05

What payment methods are accepted?

We accept Visa, Mastercard, PayPal, and direct bank transfer. A 30% deposit secures your reservation. The balance is due 60 days before travel. All payments are protected by our Swedish Kammarkollegiet government guarantee — your funds are completely secured from the moment you pay. Full payment instructions are included in your booking confirmation.

06

What's included in my tour package?

Inclusions vary by tour and tier but typically cover: guided game drives, park entry fees, accommodation per itinerary, specified meals, and all internal transfers. Each tour page lists exact inclusions and exclusions. Generally not included: international flights, travel insurance, personal expenses, and optional activities. Contact us if you need clarification on any specific tour.

07

What happens if I need to cancel my trip?

Our standard cancellation policy: 30–60 days before departure — 20% charge. 10–30 days before departure — 50% charge. Under 10 days — 100% charge. We strongly recommend travel insurance that covers cancellation. If Tourist Lads cancels or cannot deliver your confirmed itinerary, you receive a full refund. Your funds are protected at all times by the Kammarkollegiet guarantee.

08

What should I pack for my trip?

The essentials: neutral-coloured clothing (khaki, olive, beige — avoid white and bright colours on drives), warm layers for early mornings, comfortable closed-toe walking shoes, a zoom lens (100–400mm equivalent), sunscreen, and a hat. For private reserve and luxury lodge stays, soft-sided luggage is preferred. A detailed packing list specific to your itinerary is sent with your booking confirmation. Download guides are also available below.

09

What are the tipping guidelines?

Tipping is customary and appreciated in all our destinations. General guidelines: safari guide — $10–15 USD per person per day; camp/lodge staff — $5–10 USD per person per day; tracker (where applicable) — $5–10 USD per person per day. We include destination-specific tipping guidance in your pre-departure information. Gratuities are not included in tour pricing unless explicitly stated.

10

Can I customise my trip?

Yes — entirely. Every Tourist Lads journey is built around you. We can extend or shorten any itinerary, swap accommodation, add destinations, adjust activity focus, or design something completely bespoke. The tour pages on this site are starting points, not fixed products. Tell us what you want and we will design it from the ground up. Contact us with your vision.
