What Expedition Travellers Say

Verified reviews from travellers who completed this expedition.

★★★★★

“The Savuti leg destroyed me in the best possible way. Six hours through deep sand, a flat tyre at 2pm, and then — as the sun dropped — fifteen lions came to the waterhole. Nobody else there. Just us. This is how safari should be.”

“Deception Valley in the Kalahari is not for everyone. But if you want silence, stars, and to feel genuinely small in the best way — this is it. The black-maned lions were extraordinary. Our guide found them on foot at dawn.”

“I’ve done lodge safaris all over Africa. This is something different entirely. Cooking over a fire, camping without fences, and waking at 3am to hear a lion 50 metres away. Tourist Lads handled every difficult booking. We just adventured.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before joining this expedition.

Do I need prior 4×4 or camping experience?

No prior 4×4 driving experience is required — your professional guide handles all driving and navigation. For camping, basic outdoor experience is helpful but not essential. The guide will assist with campfire setup, equipment, and daily routines. You do need reasonable physical fitness for walks and game activities.

What camping equipment do I need to bring?

You need to provide your own tent, sleeping bag, sleeping mat, cooking equipment, and utensils. The 4×4 vehicle has storage but space is limited — soft-sided bags only. We provide a comprehensive equipment checklist to all confirmed guests and can advise on equipment hire in Kasane if needed.

How remote is the Central Kalahari leg?

Very remote. Deception Valley in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve is one of the most isolated destinations in Southern Africa. There is no phone signal, no shops, and no other facilities. All food, water, and fuel must be carried in. This is genuinely off-grid wilderness — and that is exactly the point.

What is the best time for this expedition?

May–September (dry season) is optimal — firmer tracks, excellent predator sightings as animals concentrate at water, and more comfortable camping temperatures. The Kalahari leg is particularly extraordinary in the dry season. July–August sees the highest wildlife activity across all three ecosystems.

Is this trip suitable for families with children?

This expedition is recommended for adults and teenagers 16+ with a genuine sense of adventure. The rugged 4×4 driving, remote camping without facilities, and 5–6 hour transit days make it challenging for younger children. For family-friendly Botswana options, we recommend our 6 Nights Conservation Package.

What happens if the vehicle breaks down in a remote area?

Our professional guides are fully trained in bush mechanics and carry comprehensive emergency equipment including satellite communication, first aid kits, and recovery gear. The heavy-duty 4×4 is serviced before each expedition. In the unlikely event of a serious breakdown, we have emergency protocols and communication with our Botswana operations team.
