Tanzania Safari FAQs β€” Everything You Need to Know

Real answers to the questions every Tanzania safari traveller asks.

When is the best time to safari in Tanzania?

Tanzania’s dry season (June–October) is peak safari season β€” animals concentrate around waterholes, vegetation is thin for easy sightings, and the Great Migration river crossings occur July–September. The short green season (January–March) is excellent for calving and fewer crowds. Tanzania is good year-round.

Do I need a visa to visit Tanzania?

Most nationalities require a visa for Tanzania, which can be obtained on arrival or via the Tanzania e-Visa portal before travel. We strongly recommend applying online in advance. We provide all clients with a destination-specific entry requirements guide upon enquiry.

Is malaria a concern in Tanzania?

Yes, malaria is present in most Tanzania safari areas. Anti-malarial prophylaxis is strongly recommended, along with mosquito repellent and long clothing at dawn and dusk. Zanzibar is also a malaria zone. We advise consulting a travel health clinic 6–8 weeks before your departure date.

Which airport do I fly into for Tanzania safaris?

Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), near Arusha, is the main gateway for northern Tanzania safaris including the Serengeti, Ngorongoro, and Tarangire. Dar es Salaam (DAR) is used for southern circuits. For Zanzibar beach extensions, Zanzibar Airport (ZNZ) serves direct flights from Nairobi and Dar.

Can I combine a Tanzania safari with Zanzibar?

Absolutely β€” our Wildlife & Waves tour is built exactly for this. A short domestic flight connects you from Arusha or the Serengeti directly to Zanzibar in under two hours. It’s one of Africa’s most satisfying combinations: the thrill of the bush followed by complete relaxation on one of the world’s best beaches.

What currency is used in Tanzania?

The Tanzanian Shilling (TZS) is the local currency, though US Dollars are widely accepted at lodges, park gates, and tourist businesses. We recommend bringing USD in small denominations for tips and minor purchases. ATMs are available in Arusha and major towns but are unreliable in remote areas.
